Old Town Alexandria
Kelly Duerst Photography
There’s something about Old Town Alexandria that makes it one of my favorite places for engagement sessions. No matter how many times I walk through its charming streets, I always find new spots to inspire creativity and bring out the personality of each couple I photograph. That’s the beauty of Old Town — it never feels the same twice, and that makes every session unique and special.
When you think of Old Town, the first images that probably come to mind are the quintessential row houses. Their colorful shutters, brick steps, and flower-filled window boxes are the perfect backdrop for engagement photos that feel both timeless and full of character. I love starting sessions on streets lined with historic homes because it immediately sets a cozy, romantic tone.
Then there are the cobblestone alleys that make Old Town so iconic. There’s something magical about these tucked-away paths — they’re quiet, intimate, and perfect for those natural, in-between moments. I often tell my couples to walk hand-in-hand, laugh together, or share a private moment as we wander through these streets. It gives the photos an authentic, candid feel.
As the session continues, we usually make our way toward the heart of King Street and the surrounding blocks, stopping whenever we see a doorway, ivy-covered wall, or bright pop of color that catches the eye. That’s one of the best parts of shooting in Old Town: even if I’ve photographed here dozens of times, there are always fresh angles, new lighting, or little details that make each session completely one-of-a-kind.
Of course, no Old Town engagement session would be complete without heading down to the waterfront. The light by the water is stunning — soft and golden as the sun sets, reflecting off the Potomac River and creating a beautiful natural glow. Some of my favorite spots include the boardwalk near the Torpedo Factory, the open view by the marina, and the little nooks near the docks where we can capture a quiet, intimate moment away from the crowds.
The waterfront is also a great way to change up the look of the session. We go from brick-lined streets and colorful doors to wide-open sky and gentle water — giving couples a variety of backdrops in a single hour. Plus, it’s a lovely place to slow down, take a breath, and just enjoy being together.
Whether you want elegant and formal images, playful and candid photos, or a little bit of both, Old Town Alexandria truly has it all. Its versatility allows me to craft a session that matches your personality as a couple while still feeling classic and timeless.
